I
have a road bike without eyelets, which rack would
you recommend?
The best solution for you is our Sherpa model. It comes in front and rear models. Here is a picture of the Sherpa Rear on a road bike without eyelets and a typical road-caliper brake. We recommend the Sherpa over the Cold Springs in this case because the Sherpa has a narrower profile and tends to look better on a road bike. Notice how the extension bars attach directly to the seat stays with a set of coated rubber clamps, available free by request.
How
do the racks attach to the brake bosses?
Our
extension bars attach to a pair of angled brackets that fit
right under the head of the screw that holds on your brake
arms. You do not remove or alter your brake arms during
installation. The brake arms can move freely with absolutely
no change in performance. (Our bracket is only .125in.
thick). See picture to the right.
Will
your racks fit on my full-suspension Gary Fisher Sugar
(Trek Fuel, Santa Cruz Superlight,
Specialized FSR, etc...)?
Yes! These are precisely the type of bikes that benefit most from the axle and brake-bolt mounting design found on our Sherpa, Cold Springs, and Ultimate LowRider.
My
bike has Disc-Brakes, will your racks still fit?
Yes! Our Cold Springs and Sherpa Rear models are available in DISC version, with wider and taller lower mounting brackets just for this purpose. To the right is a GIANT NRS Air with Hayes mechanicals. As you can see there is ample clearance. Some people have even found that flipping the lower bracket around solves the problem. If all else fails, give us a call and we'll make it right.
Yes! Depending on the size of your seat stays (the frame tubes that go from your seat to the rear axle) or your fork legs, you would either request a pair of standard clamps (also available at bike shops and hardware stores) or our new, OMM Band Clamps (for 1" diameter and over). Simply wrap a string around the tube and measure it. Then, give us a call at (888) 439-6445 or (805) 692-9950.
Do your racks come with any kind of warranty and how about the return policy?
All racks have a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects in craftsmanship. Here at Old Man Mountain we take pride in the quality of our products and in how we treat our customers...so if you feel you have an issue, just give us a call or email us and we'll get everything straightened out, ASAP.
If the issue does not concern a manufacturing defect, please contact us with the specifics and we'll try and resolve the issue to your satisfaction. If you were not able to fit our rack to your bike to your satisfaction, call us first to see if we can solve your problem. If we can't get you going, then we will accept the rack in "good as new" condition (superficial markings on the mounting brackets are OK) for a full refund (we do not refund shipping charges). If the rack has been used and is not in re-saleable condition, we reserve the right to charge a 30% restocking and handling fee. We also ask for your cooperation in providing us feedback that so we can properly analyze the issue.
Before returning the rack, please call our customer service line at (888) 439-6445 or (805) 692-9950 for an RA# to write on the outside of your package.
The main difference is in style. The Cold Springs looks much more aggressive with its extra wide (6.75") gear shelf that has a laser cut "spider web" look. The Sherpa is more reserved, with a minimalist look. The Cold Springs rear also has a load stop bar, while the Sherpa has none. Finally, the Cold Springs is more durable with an extra 10 lbs. of capacity due to its unique, folded aluminum gear shelf design. Find out more at the Front and Rear Rack pages.
Do you have to buy an extra-long quick-release skewer to fit with your lower mounting brackets?
No! A longer quick release skewer is included with each rack (Cold Springs, Sherpa, and Ultimate LowRider.)
I have a hardtail with eyelets, do Old Man Mountain racks work with this?
Yes! We are known for our axle-mounting designs however, the Red Rock and White Rock are perfect for bikes that have a lower eyelet. These two models also mount to your brake-bolts, which is a much more stable and hassle-free point of attachment than the upper eyelets used by other racks. If your bike does not have "V" or canti-brake bosses, simply attach our extension bars to your seat stays with a pair of vinyl-coated, "C" clamps.
Will my pannier bags work with your racks?
Yes! All of our racks use 3/8” diameter tubing. As far as we know, this is the same width tubing as most other racks out there. We do know that there’s nothing wider currently in use; however, some rack makers still use 5/16” diameter tubing or solid rod. Give customer service a call at (888) 439-6445 or (805) 692-9950 if you have any more questions.
Since your f/s compatible racks are attached at the QR, how do I remove the wheel if I have a flat?
Simply release the QR lever and completely remove the skewer. The rack will usually just remain seated in the axle dropouts, allowing you to remove the wheel and make your repair.
