Axle mounting protects your frame by moving the load from a small bolt that's loaded in shear to a stud that extends from the axle and is captured by the rack dropouts.

    This thru axle is for attaching an Old Man Mountain rack to the rear of a bike that has a 12 mm thru axle with 1.75 mm thread pitch and 174 or 167 mm length with included spacers. We partner with The Robert Axle Project to supply our thru axles.
    • Diameter of thru axle is 12 mm.
    • Thread pitch is 1.5 mm.
    • True length of axle is 188 mm, but can be shortened to 176 mm with the included spacers.

We've secured them to the rack with camming velcro straps at the top and use the lower compression strap to loop through the rack and guarantee that your bags don't turn into dumbo ears when you hit a bump, no matter how rough. We've made all of the compression straps replaceable so next time you spill some salsa on your bag and Mr. Mouse nibbles through one you can just swap it out, nice and easy. The Ponderosa Panniers have the typical frame sheet in the back (against the rack), but we've also added a removable frame sheet on the frontside of the bag so it compresses evenly to give you the slimmest profile bag possible with what you choose to carry.
